Mumbai: Former chairman of Tata Group, Cyrus Mistry, was killed on Sunday in a road accident near Mumbai in Maharashtra.

As per reports, the incident occurred near Mumbai when Mistry was travelling from Ahmedabad to Mumbai in a Mercedes car.

According to preliminary reports, the 54-year-old Mistry's Mercedes car collided with a road divider near Casa. Thought the Mercedes airbags opened after the collision, but two people, including Mistry, died.

Reportedly, there were a total of four people in the car.

Palghar Superintendent of Police Balasaheb Patil said that the number of the car in which Mistry was traveling is MH-47-AB-6705.

''The accident happened at around 3.30 pm on the bridge of Surya river on the way from Ahmedabad to Mumbai. Two people died in the accident, while the other two were injured,'' he added.

As per police, all the injured including Mistry were taken to a hospital in Casa where two people were declared brought dead. The remaining two injured are being treated.

Several people including Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari have paid tribute on the death of Cyrus Mistry.

''Deeply saddened to learn about the unfortunate demise of former Tata Sons Chairman Cyrus Mistry ji in a road accident near Palghar, Maharashtra. Heartfelt condolences to his family members. God rest his soul. om Shanti,'' Gadkari Tweeted.

''Heartbreaking news. My brother Cyrus Mistry passed away. Can't believe it. Rest in Peace Cyrus," NCP MP Supriya Sule said.

At the same time, Harsh Goenka, Chairman, RPG Enterprises also expressed grief over Mistry's demise.

Taking to the Twitter, he said, ''Heard about the shocking news of Cyrus Mistry's demise in an accident. He was a very good friend of mine. He was instrumental in forming the Shapoorji Pallonji Group.''

Cyrus Pallonji Mistry was born on 4 July 1968 and was the younger son of Pallonji Mistry, the head of Shapoorji Pallonji Group. Cyrus did his early schooling from the Cathedral and John Connon School in Mumbai. After this he went to London to study civil engineering.

He also had a Master's degree in Management from the London Business School.

In December 2012, Ratan Tata took retirement as the chairman of Tata Sons and after that Cyrus Mistry was made the chairman of Tata Sons.

Cyrus Mistry was the sixth group chairman in Tata's more than 150-year history. He was also the youngest chairman of Tata Sons.
